Three ways to get bikes from your driveway to the Katy Trail in a Lincoln, and the small habits that keep the paint and the bikes in good shape.
Saturday morning in June, the Frontier Park lot in St. Charles is full by eight. Half the SUVs have bikes hanging off the back, a few have them on the roof, and at least one family is wrestling two kids' bikes out of a cargo area with the seats folded flat. All three work. Some just work better than others for the way you ride.
We get asked about bike racks a lot at the parts counter, usually right after someone has scratched a liftgate trying the cheap strap on kind. So this is what we tell people about carrying bikes on a Lincoln, from the hitch to the roof to the cargo floor, with the Katy Trail in mind.
Quick answer: For most Lincoln SUVs, a hitch mounted rack is the easiest way to carry two to four bikes, as long as the vehicle has a receiver hitch. Roof racks work with the right crossbars, and one or two bikes can ride inside with the seats folded. Check your owner's guide for hitch and roof load limits before you buy.

What Are the Ways to Carry Bikes on a Lincoln SUV?
You've got three real choices. A rack that slides into a receiver hitch, a rack that sits on roof crossbars, or the cargo area itself. Strap on trunk racks that hook over the liftgate are the fourth option, and we'd steer you away from them on a Lincoln. The hooks and pads sit right on painted panels, and grit works its way under them on the first gravel road.
Which one makes sense depends on how many bikes you carry, how often, and whether you need the liftgate while they're on.

Is a Hitch Mounted Bike Rack the Right Choice?
For most people, yes. A platform style hitch rack holds bikes by the wheels, sits low enough that lifting a heavy bike isn't a chore, and keeps everything off the paint. Many tilt or swing away so you can open the liftgate without unloading. That matters at a trailhead when the cooler and the helmets are in the back.
The catch is the hitch itself. Some Lincoln SUVs come with a receiver from the factory as part of a towing package, and others don't. If yours doesn't, our parts and service teams can talk you through hitch options for your model. You can also start with an order for parts and ask questions there.
Before you buy a rack, look up the tongue weight limit in your owner's guide, and compare it to the weight of the rack plus the bikes. E bikes are where people get surprised. Two of them on a heavy platform rack can add up faster than you'd think, and some racks are rated for e bikes while others aren't.
A rack that sways or knocks
A loose hitch pin or a rack without an anti rattle bolt will wobble at highway speed. Snug it up before you leave the driveway.
Blocked plates and lights
Bikes can cover the license plate or the tail lamps. Missouri wants the plate visible, so check from behind before you pull out.
Backing into trouble
A rack adds length. Rear sensors and the camera may react to the rack itself, and it's easy to forget it's there in a tight garage.

When Does a Roof Rack Make More Sense?
A roof setup keeps the back of the vehicle clear, so the liftgate opens like normal and nothing sticks out behind you. You need crossbars that fit your Lincoln's roof rails, and a bike mount for each bike. Your owner's guide lists the roof load limit, and the crossbars carry a rating of their own. Stay under the lower of the two.
The downsides are real, though. Lifting a bike onto the roof of a full size SUV is a stretch for most people, especially a muddy one at the end of a ride. Wind noise goes up and fuel economy goes down. More than one bike has met a garage door at the end of a long day.

If you go this route, put a note on the dash or hang something from the garage door opener so you remember the bikes are up there.
Can You Fit Bikes Inside a Lincoln?
Often, yes. With the rear seats folded, a lot of Lincoln SUVs will swallow one adult bike, and the larger ones can take two with the front wheels off. It keeps the bikes out of the weather and away from thieves when you stop for lunch in Defiance, and you don't have to buy anything.
Protect the cabin first. A moving blanket or cargo liner keeps chain grease off the carpet and seat backs. Set the bikes drive side up so the derailleur isn't carrying the weight, and strap them down so nothing shifts when you brake hard on Highway 94.
St. Peters driver tip
The Katy Trail lots fill early on summer weekends. Frontier Park in St. Charles and the Defiance trailhead off Highway 94 are both busy by midmorning, so go early or plan a Sunday afternoon ride instead. If you load bikes inside, back into the space so you can open the liftgate without blocking the lane.

How Do You Keep Trail Dust Off Your Lincoln?
The Katy Trail is crushed limestone, and that fine white dust gets everywhere. It clings to tires and frames, then drops onto the rack, the bumper and the paint. On a wet day it turns into a gritty paste that sticks to the lower doors and the liftgate.
Rinse it off soon instead of wiping it dry, because dry wiping drags the grit across the clear coat. Take the bikes off the hitch rack once in a while and clean around the receiver too. Water and dust sit in there and the pin can seize if it's ignored all summer.
If a rack strap or a pedal does leave a mark, have it looked at before it gets worse. Small chips are easier to deal with early, and our body shop does paint and paintless dent repair.

Does my Lincoln have a hitch receiver already?
Look under the rear bumper for a square opening, or check your window sticker for a towing package. If you aren't sure, the service team can tell you from the VIN.
What size hitch do bike racks need?
Many racks come in versions for the two common receiver sizes. Match the rack to the receiver on your vehicle, and don't rely on an adapter for a heavy rack.
Can I add a hitch to a Lincoln that didn't come with one?
Many models can be fitted with one. Ask the parts or service team what's available for your model and trim.
Questions Owners Ask About Electric Bikes
Are e bikes too heavy for a hitch rack?
Not if the rack is rated for them and the total stays under your hitch's tongue weight limit. Add up the rack and the bikes before you buy.
Should I take the battery off an e bike before driving?
Many riders do, since it lightens the load on the rack and keeps the battery out of the rain. Follow the bike maker's advice.
Can I charge an e bike battery in my Lincoln?
Some vehicles have a household style outlet and some don't. Check your owner's guide for what your outlet supports before plugging in a charger.
Questions Owners Ask About Driving With Bikes
Will a bike rack set off my parking sensors?
A hitch rack can, since it sits behind the bumper. Your owner's guide explains how the sensors behave with a trailer or accessory attached.
Is it safe to take bikes through a car wash?
Take the bikes and the rack off first. Roof racks and hitch racks can catch on brushes, and most washes won't let you in with them on.
How fast can I drive with bikes on the roof?
Follow the rack maker's guidance, and check the straps at your first stop.
Questions Owners Ask About the Katy Trail
Where can I start the Katy Trail near St. Peters?
Frontier Park on Main Street in St. Charles is the closest for most of our customers. Defiance, out Highway 94, makes a good starting point for a ride through wine country.
Is the Katy Trail OK for road bikes?
It's crushed limestone, so wider tires are more comfortable. Hybrids and gravel bikes handle it well, and skinny road tires can feel loose in soft spots.
Is there parking at the trailheads?
Most trailheads have a lot, and the popular ones fill on summer weekends. An early start makes it easier to find a spot.
